Made in the shade: Choosing the right sunglasses

Choosing the right pair of sunglasses is about a lot more than looking stylish. Our optometrist at Optical Outlets stresses the importance of choosing the right style and features for providing maximum protection against the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. Exposure to UV rays increases the risk of developing vision problems including cataracts and macular degeneration. This is especially important as we head into the warmer months when the sun’s rays are more powerful and we’re spending more time outdoors.

Here are a few tips on how to select sunglasses that are right for you:

  • First, those sunglasses must block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. You’ll find this information on a label or sticker on the glasses. Keep in mind that the darkness of the lenses don’t mean they are offering maximum UV protection.
  • Consider your lifestyle and activities. Are the glasses for everyday wear, or for sports and activities that require snug fit and glare reduction? If fashion is important, make sure those stylish shades provide UV protection.
  • Lens color is another consideration. Gray lenses provide accurate color perception; brown enhances contrast and depth perception; and yellow improves depth perception in low-light conditions.
  • Ask our optometrist about the different materials the lenses are made of, which determine their clarity, weight, and impact-resistant qualities. Match these qualities with what you’ll be using the sunglasses for, such as sports or other activities.

Your vision, pre-existing eye conditions, profession, lifestyle and activities all factor into electing sunglasses that are the best fit for you. Let our optometrist and our friendly staff at Optical Outlets ensure that you’re protecting your vision as well as looking sharp!
