Be on the Lookout for These Common Eye Issues

August 27, 2024

Your eyes help you perform just about every daily activity, from reading to driving. Reduced eye health can lead to vision problems that can have an impact on your quality of life.

The office of Optical Outlets boasts a team of highly skilled and qualified providers who have undergone rigorous training and education to deliver excellent eye care. Our sophisticated technology and equipment let us meet the needs of all of our patients. We also carry a large selection of attractive eyeglass frames.

Here are some top causes of challenges that can sidetrack your vision.

Conjunctivitis (pinkeye) is when the tissue that lines the back of your eyelids and covers your sclera (the eyes’ white outer coating) gets aggravated. Your eyes itch, burn, get red, emit a discharge or feel like something’s in your eye. All ages are susceptible. Causes include allergies, infection or exposure to chemicals and other irritants. Fight it off by washing your hands often and not touching your eyes.

Bloodshot eyes can crop up when the surface blood vessels expand due to infection or irritation. The redness can be from conjunctivitis, eyestrain, allergies, lack of sleep, or bright days without sunglasses. See an optometrist if rest and over-the-counter eye drops don’t clear them up.

Dry eye is usually triggered when the tears on the thin coating of your eyes evaporate because you’ve been concentrating so long and hard that you’ve blinked less than normal. When you finally do blink, your eyelids rub over that thin coating, which would normally be slathered with a smooth film of normal tears but is instead covered with concentrated, salty tears. Irritated eyes and lids follow. An optometrist can advise you on the kind of artificial tears to use and explore any underlying causes.

Excess tearing isn’t from crying. Perhaps your peepers are irritated by wind, radical temperature changes or bright light. Sunglasses—especially the ones with wraparound frames—will block out those troublemakers.

If your contacts are giving you woe, remember this: Touch them only when your hands are squeaky clean, never put them in your mouth, and cleanse and store them correctly. Be mindful of, depending on the recommended wearing period, how long you leave them in your eyes. If you’re doing everything right and still having problems, see your optometrist.
